Tariff Analysis for US Manufacturing Facilities. Evaluated tariffs for numerous manufacturing facilities in different states to reduce electricity costs. The analysis included review of tariff options, load management, demand response, cogeneration, and wholesale purchase of power.
Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) Valuation in California. Conducted an analysis leading to an expert opinion on the valuation of a PPA. The analysis included fuel and power risk assessments and forecasts, evaluation of cogeneration facility operation, economic model development, and financial analysis for assessing impacts on various parties such as owners, utilities, and lenders.
Evaluation of Fuel Repowering Project in Venezuela. Conducted an evaluation of fuel and financing options for a 132 MW repowering project. The analysis included a comparison of economics and environmental impact of various fuels for the project including heavy oil, orimulsion and petroleum coke.
Private Project Development in India. Taught a two-week training course in India to over 25 representatives from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu state electricity boards on how to attract private project financing and development.
Refinery Valuation Study to Support Distressed Financing. Advisor on a time critical refinery valuation study to support a potential debtor-in-possession financing of a troubled U.S. based independent refinery. The study involved due diligence review of internal reports, third party studies, and commercial agreements, as well as a site visit and interviews with senior management. A comparative valuation was also made based on recent refinery transactions.
Financial Due Diligence - Capital Investment in US Alternative Fuels Business. Assisted an international energy company make strategic equity investments to capitalize on its large gas resources in Russia to address the need in many cities for lower polluting vehicles powered by alternative fuels. Performed the necessary due-diligence evaluations for: 1) A transportation quality Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plant, and 2) A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) business serving major international airports.
Due Diligence for Capital Investment in Transportation & Natural Resource Development in Central Asia. Assisted with due-diligence evaluation of various operations relating to transportation and natural resource development in Kazakhstan. Successfully negotiated various lease & collateral agreements, including a 70% discount on the purchase of 50 leased trucks from Daimler-Benz in Germany.
Acquisition Study for a Renewable Fuels Company. Conducted a financial evaluation of a 140 million gallon per year multi-plant renewable fuels company with extensive marketing and distribution capabilities. The purpose of the study was to determine an appropriate value for the company as well as the long-term viability of the business. The study looked at the existing business as well as supply-demand trends, replacement value of facilities, and comparative market value of similar businesses. Financial backing for a $100 million bid was secured from a private equity fund of an international investment bank.
Financing for a Startup Biodiesel Company. As part of the process of commercialization of this mid-Atlantic based biodiesel manufacturing facility, the following agreements were negotiated: 1) Guaranteed multi-year product off-take with a biodiesel marketing company that ensured a financially acceptable profit for the facility; 2) A joint venture technology partnership with an engineering and equipment supply company for oilseed crushing and vegetable oil refining in the world; 3) A feedstock supply offer from a private agricultural company. A USDA Rural Development loan guarantee and the necessary financing including term debt, a working capital line of credit, seed and venture capital equity, as well as Federal and State grants – totaling $10+ million were secured.
Fuel Cells and Distributed Technologies Business Plan. Developed and executed program plan for energy institution’s fuel cell technology business. Executed strategic deals with partners and collaborators to establish a new fuel cell company. Provided state-of-the-art assessment on fuel cells, other distributed power generation, batteries and energy storage technologies to institution's client utilities, energy companies, and interested stakeholders. As a key spokesperson for the business - presented institution’s fuel cell, microturbines, energy storage and other distributed energy resource activities at high-level financial and industry conferences.
Energy Efficiency Assessments. Performed over 100 industrial facility efficiency assessments in chemicals, refining, metal, mining, food and paper industries. Participated in over 10 major refinery projects using Pinch Technology and Process Integration to reduce energy usage and pollutants.
Training. Taught over 30 four-day public and private courses in energy efficiency improvement to industrial representatives. Served as a course director for several USAID-sponsored training courses that were approximately two months in duration. Conducted in-house training for several Mexican, Indonesian and Korean oil companies.
Industry/Utility Collaborative Energy Efficiency Technologies. As a consultant to a major energy institution, promoted collaborative projects between industrial plants and electric utilities for the deployment of efficient electricity based technologies. Developed over 15 successful projects in refining, petrochemical and chemical, paper and food industries.
European Energy Strategy for a Multi-national Company. Developed a pan-European energy strategy for over 100 manufacturing facilities across ten European countries. Project required coordination of a wide range of fuel and power matters, such as contracts, consumption, and rapidly changing fuel and electricity markets, and the development of lower-cost energy purchase initiatives and risk mitigation measures.
Outsourcing of Utilities at a Chemical Complex in Germany. Assisted in the sale of a lignite-based powerhouse to an Energy Service Company, and the development of a gas-based CHP system to replace an old powerhouse for an industrial park in Germany hosting three different chemical companies.
Strategic Planning of Investment Options for Various Companies. Performed a risk analysis of complex investment options at a chemical complex in Louisiana. Analyzed options for meeting long term electricity requirements at a mining company in Nevada. In Italy and Spain, options for securing clean, low cost, reliable power included a comparison of the economics of utility asset purchase with greenfield project development.
Cogeneration Projects. Participated in technical, economic and environmental evaluations of merchant power projects at several paper mills and oil refineries; reviewed the feasibility for petroleum coke and coal based generation; prepared bid documents and analyzed responses for third-party project development.
Company-wide Energy Cost Reduction Campaigns. Developed a successful program for energy cost reduction campaigns at several major corporations based on communication, training, facility assessments, identification of quick payback projects, tracking, and implementation.
Demand Response Programs. Developed a program plan for 'integrated architecture' requirements for integrating demand response with customer energy management systems and automated meter systems. Developed a plan for making demand response a reliable resource within the utility industry.
